Phantasmal is a one-person freelance practice. The work is deliberately unfussy: thoughtful Umbraco and .NET builds, careful migrations, rescuing inherited codebases, and the kind of long-term maintenance relationships that keep the lights on.

Hi, I'm Shane, the developer behind Phantasmal. A Software Developer by trade, an Umbraco Certified Master (the highest tier of Umbraco's developer certifications), and Microsoft Certified in Azure Fundamentals. BSc (Hons) Computer Science, University of Lincoln.

Across my career I've worked with British businesses, charities and institutions; from NHS trusts and Russell Group universities to independent local barbershops. Most of that has been through agencies. Phantasmal is the same care, available direct or alongside an existing agency team. Accessibility (WCAG AA) comes built in, not as an upsell.

What I do

  • Umbraco development & migrations

    New Umbraco builds and major version migrations on the UK's most-loved open-source CMS, covering both legacy upgrades (Umbraco 7 and 8 to 13) and LTS-to-LTS jumps (13 to 17). Traditional Razor sites or a headless content API for mobile apps and decoupled front-ends. Umbraco Certified Master, accessibility-first.

  • .NET & C# web applications

    Bespoke web applications and APIs built on C# and ASP.NET MVC, backed by Microsoft SQL Server. Long-running maintenance, modernisation work and rescues for legacy .NET codebases.

  • Azure hosting & deployment

    Azure infrastructure, deployment pipelines and hosting for .NET and Umbraco workloads. Microsoft Certified in Azure Fundamentals, with hands-on experience tightening and optimising client environments.

  • Android applications

    Native Android applications, including ones backed by a headless Umbraco CMS. Useful when your editors' content needs to live in your customers' pockets too.

  • Audits & rescues

    Inherited a project that needs an honest second opinion? Code reviews, performance audits and recovery work on Umbraco and .NET sites that have lost their way.
